Ian is a former RAF 13 (PR) Squadron tactical reconnaissance pilot and flight commander, operating Canberra PR 9 aircraft in Europe, near and middle-east theatres. He returned to the UK to graduate as a qualified flying instructor at Central Flying School (CFS). On promotion to Squadron Leader he was appointed as officer commanding the low-level and air defence lead-in squadron to prepare rear-seat crew for fast-jet operations. After a tour at King Feisal Air Academy, teaching Saudi cadets in Strikemaster aircraft, he became a Central Flying School basic examiner for several years.

In 1985 he joined BAE SYSTEMS as the PC-9 production test pilot and chief flying instructor, and simultaneously advised the company on training system design. He flew over 1000 hours in the PC-9 and converted flying instructors from Australia, Canada New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and UK.

He gained the first CFS A1 flying instructor category for single engine turbo prop aircraft and has 7000 hrs flight time in 35 types and marks.

Ian is chairman of the Sir George Cayley commemorations, and is a fellow of the RAeS. He lectures internationally on the subject of early aeronautics and pioneers of flight.
